I feel like chicken tonight! Chicken tonight!

WARNING: IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE TO SEEING ANIMALS SLAUGHTERED, DO NOT VIEW THE FOLLOWING 4 PICTURES! SORRY - but it is part of farm life!

So there were a few naughty chickens getting into the vegetable garden and eating all the tomatoes...which has become the method for choosing which chickens will be slaughtered for meat next. This is Anina, a 19 year old Canadian who we suspect was raised by wolves.
Here she is showing off her 2nd skinned kill of the evening (she did all but cut off the first 2 chickens' heads, and by the third she decided to do that as well -- holding the chicken in one hand and ax in the other!)

DJ decided to skin the last chicken. Quite different from plucking! No boiling necessary, just string the bird up and pull the skin off - feathers and all! The knife is needed to help cut or loosen the skin a bit at times, but then you simply rip it off. It's surprisingly not that messy.

Not too messy... but still gross! When some areas were too tough to rip off, Anina simply tore it off with her teeth!

Poor DJ, almost done... one of the more disgusting parts, pulling out the insides: intestines, stomach, etc.

The chicken stew came out great.

  1. I'm impressed with Anina. Yeah, skinning is not bloody. Like taking off a wet suit... you can pull hard to get it off, but at times you need to use your teeth...
