White Island, NZs most active volcano

There she is, smoking away!

Yes, we are going inside that!

Here's John, our guide giving us a safety lecture.

This helicopter landing in an ACTIVE VOLCANO overshadowed him just a bit...

Hydrogen sulphide spewing fumaroles!

Keep that gas mask on, you will need it today!

YUP, still happy, even inside an active volcano :)

Roaring fumaroles!

Layering caused by thousands of eruptions over the years.

Sulphur vents (yes, fumaroles)

The air is getting very acidic!

This is a fresh hole, formed just last week, right in the path.

Sulphur "castle" formation.

Everything is steaming, looks like she is always ready to blow!

Sulphur crystals

The acidic air is no good for metals!

Around the other side of the island, still looks like a volcano!

Looking into the steam from the boat. YES, we were in there!

Leaving it behind, it went so fast!

  1. Wow... that is SO crazy! The sulfur crystals are particularly cool too... did it stink?

  2. So cool! Were you allowed to keep the sulpher minerals? We have some for geology lab and after I hold on to a sample my hand smells like sulphur for the rest of the day, after many washes.

I think if the guide was smart/cautious he would be monitoring the gas levels and seismic activity in the area. Shorty before an eruption there is often and increase or change in the gasses, and maybe an increase in seismic activity.

Great picture of you two!!! It is nice to see your faces ;)
